BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court has ruled that technology firms are subject
to withholding tax - deduction of tax at source - when they purchase software
from global vendors such as Microsoft. This would push tech firms and branded
software distributors into a corner as they will be required to withhold
anywhere between 10-20% of their software purchase payments in the future.
The division bench of Justice DV Shylendra Kumar and Justice Arvind Kumar
pronounced the judgement on Thursday afternoon while upholding an appeal by the
income tax department that tech firms were legally obliged to withhold tax on
software purchases. The order is with retrospective effect.
The IT department argument was on the premise that any software purchase
amounted to royalty payment for a licence to use it, and should not be deemed as
a mere purchase of good that is excluded from withholding tax.
The order could impact branded software vendors such as Microsoft, their third
party distributors like Sonata Software, hardware makers like Samsung and GE who
bundles branded software with their products, tech firms like Infosys when they
effect a licensing of software, or even the local arms of HP and IBM which could
be licensing software from their parent.

Autodesk and Parallels Team to Support Mac Virtualization for AutoCAD, AutoCAD
LT, Autodesk Inventor Professional, 3ds Max and Revit Software
SAN RAFAEL, Calif., Sept. 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ:
ADSK), a leader in 2D and 3D design, engineering and entertainment software, and
Parallels, a worldwide leader in virtualization and automation software,
announced that they have signed an agreement to make Parallels Desktop for Mac
Autodesk's preferred Mac virtualization software.
Autodesk will now support use of AutoCAD software, AutoCAD LT software, Autodesk
Inventor Professional software, Autodesk 3ds Maxsoftware, Autodesk 3ds Max
Design software and the Autodesk Revit software platform for building
information modeling (BIM) on Mac OS X via Parallels Desktop. Autodesk added
official support for these products on the Mac via Boot Camp earlier this year.

MOORPARK, CA, Sep 22, 2009 – Gibbs and Associates, developer of GibbsCAM
software for maximizing programming efficiency of CNC machine tools and a
Cimatron company, announced today that it will demonstrate its complete GibbsCAM
MTM (multi-task machining) solutions at EMO, the world’s largest trade show
dedicated to metalworking equipment and productivity, this year held in Milan,
Italy, from October 5-10, 2009. The company will also highlight new rough
milling additions and its new 64-bit GibbsCAM, among many new product features.
GibbsCAM will be showcased in Cimatron Group's booth (Hall 9, Booths A10 and
A12), with additional demonstrations in exhibits of several machine tool

AutoCAD Mechanical incorporates AutoCAD's capabilities with features
specifically geared for manufacturing, allowing you to save time performing
common tasks. These were the results of an Autodesk-commissioned study.
The Study in Brief
Autodesk designed the study and commissioned an independent consultant to
explore 10 common design challenges and shows direct comparisons of the time and
effort required to accomplish each specific task in AutoCAD and AutoCAD
Mechanical software. The same specialized tasks were completed 65% faster using
AutoCAD Mechanical. The following drawing of a custom conveyor elevator was used
in the comparisons. The tests are comprehensive in nature; the tasks were used
to create the drawing from scratch, maintain it, and reuse it in other designs.
For each task, the number of commands used, number of times each command was
accessed, and the total time it took to complete each task using both AutoCAD
and AutoCAD Mechanical were documented.
Key Findings
- Drafting and annotation tasks are 55% faster
- Design and engineering tasks are 85% faster
- Risk of errors was greatly reduced because of a 60% reduction in number of commands used

Use Design Assistant Properties to help find, track, maintain, and report on the Autodesk Inventor files, using iProperties as the key to the files. You can also work with other files, such as word processing or spreadsheet documents, that are referenced by Autodesk Inventor files.
Access: Click >Manage >Design Assistant, and then click Properties.
From Microsoft Windows Explorer, select one or more Autodesk Inventor files or a folder containing Autodesk Inventor files, right-click, select Design Assistant from the menu, and then click Properties.
Note: If you drag an Autodesk Inventor file from Microsoft Windows Explorer into an active Design Assistant session, the file in the active session is replaced with the new file. Unsaved changes in the current file are lost.
